Our Mission
Mercari is a Japan-based company with the mission of “creating value in a global marketplace where anyone can buy & sell.” Having continuously worked toward this goal since our founding in 2013, we are now transforming from a startup into a global player. While this transformation brings its own specific set of challenges, we believe that solving them one after another will allow us to fully achieve our mission. Are you interested in working together to take on these exciting challenges?
Our Culture
Mercari’s culture has been central to the company since our founding, with the three core values of Go Bold, All for One, and Be a Pro. In addition, the “Trust & Openness” value was introduced to embody our culture of mutual trust, where information remains transparent and rules are kept to a minimum. Regardless of how big Mercari gets, the culture will remain essential to achieving our mission and is evidenced throughout our organization.
Position Overview
Work Responsibilities
Build@Mercari is a training program targeting software engineers that is provided by Mercari Group’s engineering organization. The program provides opportunities for skill training and an internship intended for people who for any number of reasons have not received certain opportunities in life. The program is intended to encourage people who identify as minorities that are especially underrepresented in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) and IT fields, such as women and members of the LGBT+ community.
People active in today’s IT industry have diverse skill sets and backgrounds. On the other hand, it is a fact that some people of minority standing or background may not have received a full education or the chance to work as engineers. The Build@Mercari training program provides a gentle helping hand to these individuals and helps them in their careers as engineers.
We welcome applications from people who share Mercari Group’s mission and values and who are serious about their desire to achieve personal growth through their internship. For details on Build@Mercari, also be sure to visit Mercan, Mercari’s owned media. (https://mercan.mercari.com/en/)
*Note: Due to the spread of COVID-19, the internship will take place entirely online.

Build Internship
What is the Build Training Program?
Applicants will first take a coding test. Those who pass the test will be invited to join the Build Training Program, which lasts for about three weeks. For the Build Training Program, trainees will receive outside training via an online video course that lasts about three weeks. During that time they will learn about data structures and algorithms and about the technical areas that Mercari uses in its operations. Once the trainees learn essential technical skills, they will be screened for the Build Internship. In addition, for trainees to learn about the engineering processes and each technical area that Mercari’s development processes use, we will also provide trainees with our DevDojo training videos, whose audience is new university graduates who join Mercari. Because the DevDojo is a video-based course, you can take it at your own pace and convenience. (After the training program, you will have access to the online video course for one year.)
During the Build Training Program, Mercari and Merpay employees will provide support for trainees via an online chat tool.
We also plan to prepare content that will introduce trainees to Mercari and Merpay company information sessions and engineer symposiums as well as to Mercari’s initiatives on diversity during the Build Training Program.
The Build Training Program is not compensated.
We plan to notify training program participants of the results of the selection process in early April.
What is the Build Internship?
People who finish the Build Training Program and pass the screening process for the Build Internship will spend two months on a Mercari or Merpay development team and be involved in the development of the app or feature of their respective team.
The Build Internship is compensated.
Bold Challenges
Although you will be a Build@Mercari intern, you will work as a member of Mercari Group’s engineering organization to improve and develop the features that your team is in charge of. The ability to communicate online, capacity for independent problem solving, and other such skills will also be in high demand, but you will also reap many rewards from this internship. If you are the type of person who wants to build experience and grow within an engineering organization whose engineers come from diverse backgrounds, then we encourage you to take on this challenge.
Required Experience
Applicants to this program:
Share a belief in Mercari’s mission and values
Are members of a demographic that is a minority in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) or IT fields, or self-identify as a member of minority groups
Have completed at least one course related to computer science (People engaged in independent studies and those enrolled in ongoing online studies also qualify. Applicants do not necessarily have to be enrolled in a computer science course. Our program does not require you to have a degree in computer science or even plans to acquire a degree in that field.)
Are currently enrolled in a university or post-graduate program and would be able to join the company as full employees in 2022 or later, or are university graduates with roughly one to three years of work experience
Are able to take part in the Build Internship for the two-month period from August to September 2021 at least three days a week from 10 AM to 7 PM (JST) (The number of hours you work per day is negotiable.)
Have access to a computer and an internet environment (This is necessary for you to take part in the Build Training Program. For the Build Internship, we will provide you with a computer.)
*The Build Internship is compensated. If you are currently employed, check whether your employer allows outside employment before applying.

About the Coding Test
Candidates will take the coding test online in English.
We conduct coding tests to assess applicants’ computer science-related knowledge.
In the coding test, the applicant is asked to solve problems through code. These computer science/mathematical problems provide input values and ask the applicant to write a program that produces the expected output values.
The main languages that can be used for the coding test are Go, Python, Kotlin, Swift, Java, Javascript, C, C++, C#, Ruby, and Scala.
For Build@Mercari 2021, there are two coding tests: One is for the Build Training Program, and the other is for the Build Internship.
The level of difficulty of the coding test for the Build Training Program is low. This is because, unlike the screening processes of regular internships, for the Build Training Program, we would like for many people to challenge themselves with this test. The coding test for the Build Internship is as difficult as a regular internship.

About Mercari Group
I want to circulate our limited resources to help society thrive.” Mercari was born from this idea our founder Shintaro Yamada had during a trip he took around the world. He imagined a marketplace app that would allow anyone to easily buy and sell items using their smartphone. The power of technology has now enabled people anywhere in the world to easily connect and enjoy the experience of buying and selling with each other. By doing so, we at Mercari seek to create a prospering society that circulates the limited resources we have.
Mercari, the Japan-based company that operates the marketplace app Mercari, has as its mission to “create value in a global marketplace where anyone can buy & sell.” Mercari was founded in 2013, expanding its business to the US the following year. With the US app, localized specifically for the US market, we aim to create a product that enables people to sell their possessions online with minimal effort under the mission of “making selling easier than buying.” The next service we released was Merpay, launched in Japan in 2019. It provides an easy-to-use payment service within the Mercari app. Based on its mission of “building trust for a seamless society,” Merpay seeks to create a society where anyone can realize their dreams through a new ecosystem centered on credit.
Internally, diversity and inclusion (D&I) continues to be a focus area for us, as the key to helping the companies within the Mercari Group to achieve their respective missions. Since each employee can deliver their best performance when given equal opportunities and appropriate support, we promote D&I to initiatives to create an organization where everyone can demonstrate their value to the utmost. This applies to hiring as well, where we work to ensure recruitment activities commit to a policy of equal opportunities for all, where no individual is held back by their age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, or disability.
*Please see the recruitment privacy policy for more details.
